eCS SAMBA Client to Windows 7 Professional
To create this document I used a Windows 7 Professional PC here that I had just built to replace a dead system for a local client. I have eComStation 2.1 with SAMBA in a virtual machine connected to the Windows 7 shares using the user account set up for the end user on the Windows 7 PC. I can see all the files and "folders" that this user has access to. I just successfully copied an 8MB file from the Windows 7 PC to the eCS 2.1 virtual machine drive using the eCS side of the connection. I prefer not to give Microsoft access to my eCS shares from Windows 7, so connection from Windows 7 to eComStation 2.1 is not covered here.
Here is what I did:
On Windows 7 Professional
- Open Network and Sharing Center
- Click "Change advanced sharing settings"
-
Turn ON
- ... network discovery
- ... file and printer sharing
- ... sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files to the Public folders
-
Did NOT CHANGE
- Use
- 128-bit encryption
- Turn on password protected sharing
-
DID CHANGE
- Use
- user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers
- Set the workgroup under Computer > Properties to the same name as my local SAMBA workgroup and rebooted since Microsoft's crap requires a reboot for that.
On eComStation 2.1
- Open ECS Menu > Desktop > Local Network > SAMBA Client for eComStation
-
Open File > Global Settings
- Check "Authenticate for browsing"
- Check "Refresh network neighborhood immediately"
- Click [Okay]
- Set View > Dialog
- Select "All shares on server"
- Select the PC name in the drop down list
-
Opened Advanced ... and DESELECTED "Support extended attributes"
(Note from Lewis G. R.: Gene, I am able to support extended attributes (not sure of the rationale for not enabling this, per your setup, as NTFS does indeed support EAs, AFAIK)
This is done here on our setup because we could not get Linux + XFS + SAMBA shares to work with eCS if the extended attribute support was enabled. So this is always turned off on our eCS SAMBA Client connections here no matter which OS is on the other side. YMMV.
-
Set the userid, password, mount point and mount that sucker

-
Open a "folder" on the W7 side and copy to a directory on the eCS side (w7 on top, eCS on bottom in image below. Click for full size.)

Proof that it is mounted (Click for full size):
So, this does work. Young eCS Padawan, use the eCS + SAMBA force and conquer that Windows 7 Sith Lord. :)
